42 Miles

42 Miles is a great quick read, in free verse with scrapbook like illustrations.  This is a coming of age novel, as JoEllen is turning 13 and looking for her true identity.  She is “Ellen” with her mom in their downtown Cincinnati apartment and “Joey” 42 miles down the road in dad’s county boyhood home.  JoEllen thinks that she really does live 2 separate lives–separate parents (divorce), separate homes, and separate friends.  Upon turning 13 JoEllen decides that she can no longer continue on this same path and makes big changes, that to her surprise her parents go along with.  This is a fun read that lets the reader experience the ups and downs of being a divorced family.
