Miracle on 34th Street by Valentine Davis
Harcourt Brace & World 1947
Over the Christmas holiday I decided I needed a good Christmas read so I thought 1947 copy of a Miracle on 34th Street would be perfect. There is an author’s note at the beginning of the book that says the book is based on the movie. Indeed it was! There is not one thought outside of the movie! Although I enjoyed the story a lot I was disappointed that there wasn’t more substance to the book! It is a charming story about an elderly man who looks just like Santa Claus and whose name is Kris Kringle. He is being kicked out his retirement home because he was delusional (he thought he was Santa Claus) and they wanted to send him to a Psych hospital. He decides to go out on his own and stumbles into the job as Santa in the Macy’s Day Parade and then the department store Santa. Doris Walker is the Personnel Director for Macy’s Department Store and she was responsible for hiring Kris Kringle. Doris is a single mom who has been hardened by life. She doesn’t date, she is always practical and is raising her daughter in the same manner. In fact Susan doesn’t even believe in Santa Claus but after interacting with Kris Kringle and some Christmastime magic a miracle happens!
