In 1932 Gabriella at 13 years of age, has the good life in Berlin. Dad teaches at the University and mom teaches music lessons at home. Gabriella goes to school where she recieves very high marks and hangs out with her best-friend Rosa. Life takes a sudden turn not only for Gaby but for all of Germany as Hitler rises to power. Gaby turns to her books but soon they are banned and burned. She quits school because of the propaganda by her beloved teacher. Experience the rise of Hitler, an attitude change of a country of people and how those who resisted were treated–from the eyes of a thirteen year old. Lasky does a great job with the authentic facts of the day. Having Albert Einstein as a neighbor added another dimesion to this fascinating book.
