This is a wonderful story of Lidie a 12 year old Brazilian girl who lost her mother when she was quite young. Her father and brother soon immigrate to the United States leaving Lidie with family members until they can establish jobs and a home. They left Lidie a very young girl but when they bring her to New York she has really grown up–they still treat her as a little girl. She is smart and can ride horses really well. Since dad runs the barn and her brother a jockey she feels she can fit right in–but she has a terrible time adjusting. There is also a parallel story running in this book—-a filly is born and sold. This filly, Wild Girl, also is having a difficult time adjusting. Then Wild Girl and Lidie cross paths and both of their lives are changed!
