Ida B

Ida B by Katherine Hannigan

New York:  Harper Collins, 2004

246 pages  Grades 4-6

This is a delightful story about a very precocious and spunky little girl called Ida B.  Not Ida, that’s her mother, her name is Ida B.  When she gets to school for the first time and the teacher insists on calling her Ida and squelches Ida B’s need for a schedule—Ida B begs to go back to home schooling.  All goes well until her mother gets Cancer.  Well this really takes a toll on Ida B because not only is she dealing with a very sick parent—they send her back to SCHOOL!  This is a story of how a young child handles stress—by attention seeking and getting very angry with everyone!  You will go through the various stages of a family under stress and find out how love and support will win out in the end.  She will win your heart for sure!
