This is a great retelling of Cinderella with a twist.  Ella has been given “a gift” or should I say a curse that upon her birth.  The gift of obedience.  If anyone commands Ella she must obey.  Her sweet mother upon her deathbed commands Ella not to tell anyone of her gift.  This also becomes a hardship for Ella since her dad who, remarries, is a traveling merchant and her stepsisters have figured out how to control Ella.  Ella’s only friend is Prince Char and she cannot share with him the curse that keeps her away from being with him; for fear she might put the entire kingdom in jeopardy.  You will love this fairy tale by Gail Carson Levine.
