Crispin: The Cross of Lead
There is no better time in history than the Medieval Ages for a great historical fiction novel and no better author than Avi to tell it. Avi can describe the sewage laden, rat infested streets in such detail, the reader might fall ill. This novel takes place in 14th century England to a 13 year old boy only known as Asta’s son. He and his mom have lived their whole life in a town where they are the lowest class of peasants. When his mom dies, Asta’s son is all alone, his father is said to have died during the great plague and he frets how he will he continue to live when no one will even speak to him. Unbeknownst to Asta’s son, a great secret is released when his mother died. He soon finds that he is falsely accused of theft and murder and he must flee the only home he has ever known. With no knowledge of letters, numbers and no real skills Crispin, (as he discovered his real name) is trying to solve the mystery of who he is, what skills he needs to survive and how to unravel the great secret that has fallen upon him. He has been declared a “wolves head” which means he can be killed on sight by anyone. What power does he hold deep within him? This novel is masterfully told by Avi.
