Change-Up: Mystery at the World Series

By John Feinstein

New York:  Alfred Knopf, 2009.

Grades 5-8

If you love baseball you will love this mystery!! Plenty of-play-by-play action for baseball fans and plenty of twists and turns for the mystery fans! The greatest thing about Feinstein’s novels; are his telling of a fictional story using real people!  All of the people exist, all the ball statistics are correct, the settings are factual–just the World Series games are fictional and the Minor League Pitcher who makes to the majors just in time for the World Series–Norbert Doyle.  Doyle has had a tough life in the minors, he has been a single dad to his twins since his wife tragically died in a car accident, went to college in the off season and has overcome an alcohol addiction. Doyle gets the opportunity to pitch in the 2nd game of the World Series and he has a no-hitter going into the 9th inning—what a Cinderella Story!  He becomes an instant celebrity—and that’s when our favorite teen sport reporters Steve Thomas and Susan Carol Anderson pick up the scent of something not quite right about Norbert Doyle.  So they begin to hunt down their story and you won’t believe what they dig up on the World Series Star, Nobert Doyle.  Being a big Red’s fan I loved hearing about Washington National Players Aaron Boone and Adam Dunn.  A great read for guys or girls! Batter Up!
