Doll Bones

Doll Bones

By Holly Black

New York: Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2013.

Grades 5 and Up.

Zack, Poppy and Alice–these friends were creative 12 year olds who have played together with their action figures creating stories since they were very young.

Might get props to tell the story.  A china doll perhaps.Image

Zack loved the adventure and the mystery of the story but when his dad re-enters his life—dad decides that he needs to grow up and he pitches all his ‘toys’.   Zack couldn’t bring himself to tell the girls so he backs out of the group until the “queen” a china doll that sits the locked cabinet comes to Poppy in her dreams telling her she has to reunite her bones with grave.  The doll eyes move and flutter which totally freak out Zack.  When the head comes off she sees that her now nightmares were coming true—ashes are in the body and the china is made from bones. So now the three venture off in the middle of the night to go to East Liverpool, Ohio to reunite the doll with the grave. Creepy man on the bus, stories of aliens and make-believe is looking more like real—if they can only reunite the Queen’s Ashes to her grave.  This adventure—mis-adventure will take you on the ride of your life!  A great creepy book for 5th/6th graders and up.
